Clean Energy, Brighter Future, Stronger Community
About
The 630MW Spitskop Cluster is a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) development near Northam in Limpopo. This mega PV collective project will significantly expand clean electricity generation in the region, more than doubling the current solar footprint and establishing Spitskop as the largest solar PV development in the area.
Comprising three utility-scale projects — the 240MW Copper Solar PV Project, 240MW Palladium Solar PV Project, and the 150MW Vanadium Solar PV Project — the cluster is designed to harness Limpopo’s strong solar resource to deliver reliable renewable electricity to South Africa’s national grid while supporting regional economic development and decarbonisation.
Together, these projects will include approximately 1,200,000 solar panels, generating nearly 2,000 GWh of clean electricity annually — enough to supply more than 450,000 average South African homes. The facilities will connect to the nearby Spitskop Main Transmission Station, with the project sites spanning approximately 1,300 hectares and avoiding an estimated 1,850,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Forming part of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), the projects are owned by Infinity Power Holding South Africa (Pty) Ltd (IPHSA) and Pele Green Energy (Pty) Ltd and are expected to reach commissioning in June 2028.
Community
The Spitskop Solar Cluster is committed to delivering sustainable, long-term benefits for neighbouring communities through targeted economic development initiatives. Across both construction and operations, the projects aim to create employment opportunities, stimulate local economic activity, and encourage inclusive participation.
The cluster places strong emphasis on broad-based participation, prioritising opportunities for South African citizens, black people, skilled and specialised black professionals, residents of local communities, black youth aged 15 to 35, and black women.
In addition, the Spitskop Solar Cluster will prioritise local content and procurement, while advancing black ownership and management participation. The projects will also support skills development, enterprise and supplier development, and preferential procurement initiatives aimed at building resilient, sustainable local businesses.
These commitments formed an important part of the projects’ strong Economic Development (ED) performance during the bid evaluation process, contributing to the successful award.
