The Highveld Solar Power Plant awarded in REIPPPP Round 7

The Highveld Solar Power Plant, a 240 MW solar photovoltaic project in Mpumalanga, is part of a group of new renewable energy projects awarded in Round 7 of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), announced in late December 2024. The project will be developed by Infinity Power in partnership with Pele Green Energy, together with five other solar projects located in Limpopo and the North West Province. In total, the partnership was awarded 1.28 GW of solar PV capacity across six projects. 51% of these solar PV projects are owned by Infinity Power with 49% owned by local partner, Pele Green Energy.

Once constructed, The Highveld Solar Power Plant will contribute to South Africa’s growing supply of clean electricity while supporting economic development and job creation during construction and operation. The broader portfolio of projects is expected to create thousands of employment opportunities and help reduce carbon emissions by replacing fossil-fuel-based power generation.

In December 2024, Electricity and Energy Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa reported that 48 bid responses were received for BW 7, totaling more than 10.2 GW, with independent evaluation committees at the Independent Power Producer office narrowing selections based on the request-for-proposals requirements. For Mpumalanga, The Highveld Solar Power Plant represents an important step toward a more diverse and sustainable energy future, while bringing investment and development opportunities to the region.

Once built, the six projects awarded in BW7 will triple Infinity Power’s generating capacity in South Africa and further the company’s goal of deploying 10GW of renewable energy across Africa by 2030. 51% of this solar PV project is owned by Infinity Power and 49% by Pele Green Energy.
